Supporting Our Troops

TENNESSEE MILITARY DEPARTMENT

The Tennessee Military Department is divided into three major organizations, the Tennessee Army National Guard, the Tennessee Air National Guard, and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency. The all-volunteer Tennessee State Guard also falls under the jurisdiction of the Military Department.

TENNESSEE ARMY & AIR NATIONAL GUARD

The volunteer spirit and Tennessee, an inseparable combination since 1780 when Colonel John Sevier called for "100 good men"—and 200 answered—has been a source of pride for generations of Tennesseans. Today, that spirit is still alive and well with the more than 14,000 Tennessee men and women who serve as members of the Tennessee Army and Air National Guard. They continue to be full partners with their active duty counterparts, worldwide, to make up the "Total Force" of American defense.

As we have seen since September 11, 2001, America simply cannot defend herself or go to war without the National Guard.  Since that time, more than 13,000 citizen soldiers and airmen from the Volunteer State have answered the call to active duty.

TENNESSEE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY (TEMA)

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) is the agency of state government responsible for managing the state's response to emergencies and disasters that affect the citizens of Tennessee and/or its local governments.

During non-emergency periods, TEMA is under the administrative control of the Adjutant General. During emergencies the Director reports directly to the Governor and coordinates with the Adjutant General. TEMA has 111 employees assigned in its various branches and sections with 34 of these assigned to the regions in West, Middle and East Tennessee.

TENNESSEE STATE GUARD

The purpose of the Tennessee State Guard is to provide a professional complement of personnel to support the State mission of the Federal homeland security requirements, by assisting the Tennessee Army National Guard as a force multiplier, and at the direction of the Adjuntant General, to assist civil authorities with disaster relief, humanitarian causes, ceremonial service, religious and medical support for the promotion of the well being and safety of the citizenry of Tennessee
